A two-part series—A gripping, action-packed miniseries about a mountie who finds himself at the centre of a sordid love triangle.

Pieced together from a treasure trove of real love letters, forged letters and police and court memos, this series paints a vivid snapshot of Canada as World War I raged on.

This series is a carefully selected replay from our archive, and was originally titled The Murderous Mountie.

Hi everyone. Quick note before we start. As I explained in yesterday's update, we'll be back with

0:06.2

new episodes in April, so this is a specially selected replay from the archive. It's one of my

0:13.0

favorite cases and it has a pretty special origin story. A few years ago, my journalist friend

0:19.6

Danielle Parody tipped me off about something fascinating

0:23.4

sitting in the collections at Library and Archives Canada. It was a massive file connected to a

0:29.9

strange love triangle that unfolded during the First World War. Inside were hundreds of pages

0:36.3

of documents, love letters, forge letters, police

0:40.0

notes and court memos, all piecing together a story with multiple twists and turns that ended

0:46.7

in a brutal murder. When I saw this treasure trove of archival material, I knew there was a story

0:53.5

that had to be told. So we purchased scans

0:56.5

of the entire file and handed them over to Toronto true crime author Nate Henley, who I know

1:03.0

would appreciate the rabbit hole. Nate combed through every page, added additional research

1:09.1

from the news archives and built the narrative that I then

1:12.6

adapted into the podcast series you're about to hear, called The Murderous Mountie.

1:18.5

There's a special presentation of some of these letters and notes on our website for you to

1:23.3

look at, link in the show notes. And because the story begins in Scotland, we hired Scottish

1:29.2

voice actors to read some excerpts from the letters, which brought some extra colour to this series.

1:35.7

The Murderous Mountie went on to be named the number eight podcast episode in Canada for

1:41.6

2003 in Apple Podcasts. So I've decided to share it again to meet our

1:47.4

sponsor commitments while we prepare for new episodes in April. I really appreciate your patience

1:53.5

and understanding. This is a two-part series and part two will be released tomorrow. We'll be right

2:00.4

back to begin after this short break.
