0:00.0 | So throughout a given year throughout your lifetime you will go through different seasons seasons where your hands all hands on deck at work |
0:07.6 | You might go through really hard seasons where you've got a health scare and all your focus shifts to that thing or that person and it should |
0:15.4 | Hey y'all and welcome to the Christie right show. I'm so excited because today we're talking all about balance. Yeah, the number one question |
0:34.6 | I am asked everywhere that I go and then we're going to talk about an article I saw recently that actually talks about the double standard when it comes to work life balance. |
0:43.9 | But first let's talk about what balance even means. I don't know about you, but I think about this topic a lot. I hear about this topic a lot. I read about it a lot. I'm asked this question a lot. |
0:54.7 | But you know what I never see? I never see people actually defining what it means. What does work life balance even mean? Is balance even possible? Like is it this 50 50 split? I work 50% of my time. I'm at home 50% of my time and actually have a life. Is that what it is? |
1:11.0 | I don't think that's realistic or achievable or even desirable in many cases. Well, does it mean that you just do everything for an equal amount of time. Like every single day you have a perfect split of how you spend your time. |
1:25.0 | I don't think that's it either. And I've noticed that how our goals and priorities intersect our time really affects our ability to feel balanced or think of our lives as balanced. |
1:38.4 | So let me give you an example every January. What do you do? You set goals. New years resolutions. This is the year. This is the year. I'm going to pay off that debt. This is the year. I'm going to lose that weight. This is the year. I'm going to join a Bible study. This is the year. I'm going to read, you know, 30 books. Whatever the thing is. And then what happens by March? By March, we've fallen off the wagon. Our goals have gone by the wayside. We feel guilty. We feel bad. We go back to the day to day grind of just keeping up with our regular responsibilities. |
2:06.4 | And then next year when January rolls around, we set those goals again, only to forget them again by March. Here's the problem with this. |
2:16.4 | Goals and priorities are not a once a year thing. Goals are not a January thing. It's not something that we set in January and then hold ourselves to in November because why because your life changes. |
2:32.4 | And as your life changes, your priorities change. As your life shifts and different seasons come and go, your priorities should shift as different seasons come and go. Let me give you a couple examples that I've experienced in my life. |
2:48.4 | During the spring of 2017, I was on the road nonstop. That was the year my book, Business Boutique came out. I was on Book Tour. I was doing media. I was all over the country. I saw my family when I was home. And I didn't spend much time with my friends. I didn't spend any time working out. |
3:05.4 | And all those other things that are important to me usually fell by the wayside in that season. Now, if you look at my life and assess my ability to be balanced based on that three month period of time, |
3:17.4 | you would say, whoa, she's a workaholic. Whoa, she doesn't prioritize her family. Whoa, she has no other extracurricular activities, no exercise, no friendships, nothing else going on but work. And sometimes her family, she is not balanced. |
3:30.4 | You would think that. And rightfully so, if you look at that moment in my life, if you look at that season of my life. |
3:39.4 | But then let's contrast that with a completely different season. I've had three babies. I have gone on three maternity leave and do you know what I do during maternity leave? Not a lot of anything. |
3:49.4 | I hang out with my baby. I try to wash bottles. I try to sleep when I can. And I enjoy that season of being home, being in yoga pants and snuggling with my newborn. |
4:00.4 | Now, if you look at that snapshot of my life, you'd be like, girl, you need to shower. You need to get it together or go out to eat or go do something, get out of the house. |
4:09.4 | If you look at that season of my life and assess my ability to be balanced on that season, let's see, that's the problem. |
4:16.4 | Life balance isn't doing everything for an equal amount of time all the time. |
4:21.4 | Life balance is doing the right things at the right time. So throughout a given year, throughout your lifetime, |
