Today's story is bittersweet. Earlier this summer I began looking for two men who claimed in

1991 to have fooled the world by creating

crop circles. I learnt the surviving man Doug Bauer was very ill and unlikely to be able to talk to me.

His good friend John Lundberg, who documented his story, was too sad to speak to.

A few weeks later, on July 21stst I heard that Doug had died at the grand old age of 94.

But John wanted to provide a testimony of his good friend's impact on the world of art and of course

mischief as well as revealing some previously unreported elements of Doug's story.

So here it is. We begin in September 1991 when a decades old

mystery seemed to have been solved when two Englishmen claimed responsibility for the creation of crop circles.

The huge patterns had been appearing on farmland across England for years and had everyone puzzled,

with explanations ranging from whirlwinds to UFOs.
