Hello and welcome to Behind the Horror. Scary movie fans such as myself will hear

that a movie is based on a true story. A few of them we know, but most, well we never really go on to find

out just what that true story is. So in this series, we explore and find out exactly what the true story is behind the movies we love.

The 2008 movie, The Strangers, starts us off immediately in the opening credits with a narrator telling us that the movie is based on true events.

He tells us that, quote,

According to the FBI, there are an estimated 1.4 million violent crimes

in America each year.

He then tells us that on the night of February 11, 2005, our two main characters,

Kristen McKay and James Hoyt, left a friend's wedding reception and returned to the Hoyt family's summer home.

He tells us, quote, the brutal events that took place there are still not entirely known."

We then hear a truck start in what appears to be the driver of that truck, driving through

a nice, established, what looks like an upper middle class neighborhood

passing house after house.
