Kenneth Branagh's latest film, Belfast, is a huge international hit.

No doubt about that.

It's in the mix for BAFTAs and Oscars galore

and the Queen's Film Theatre in the heart of the city itself has confirmed it

as the biggest hit ever in the cinema's 53-year history.

But yet, not everyone is convinced.

For some, it's a feel-good memoir of a challenging time that's

surprisingly short on historical detail and political context. So, what are the politics of

Belfast the movie? That's what we're discussing on this week's Red Lines in the company of the

Belfast-based novelist Jan Carson and Dr Mark Feeleyn, who's a senior lecturer in drama at Queen's University.

Thank you for joining us on Red Lines this week.

Jan, broad brushstrokes, first of all, does Belfast work as a piece of cinema for you?

I think I was very sceptical going into the QFT to watch it.

I kind of really want it to hate it because I love to have a good gripe about a movie and it kind of was a stealth hit for me. I was moved by it. I definitely was. There were a few tears shed and I think it's a beautiful piece of cinema. It has some standout performances.

Karen Hines for me was the standout.

And as a story, it was captivating.

But I can also see the holes and the flaws as well.

And I've been looking forward to having a bit of a picking it apart here with you two this afternoon.

I think we're all looking forward to that.

And there are ups and there are downs that we'll come to in due course. Mark, I think you, like me, were nervous about going to see the film because you were concerned you might end up not liking it.

Were your worst fears confirmed or were you pleasantly surprised?
