May 26, 1989, Kelowna, British Columbia. While taking a lengthy backpacking trip through Canada,

20-year-old British national Charles Horbath cashes his check at a bank but soon vanishes

without a trace. After not hearing from him for several months, Charles's mother, Denise Allen,

travels to Kelowna to perform a search and learns that Charles was staying at a local campground

until he abruptly disappeared and left his personal belongings behind. Over the years,

there are a number of leads, including an anonymous note which states that Charles was killed at

the campground before he was dumped in the lake, but there are no conclusive answers about what

happened to him. After that, the trail went cold.

Robin Warder, and today we're going to be exploring a missing persons case from our podcast

Home Country of Canada, the 1989 disappearance of Charles Horbath. This story was featured on

Unsolved Mysteries, and as you can imagine, I received a ton of requests to cover it over the years.

Charles Horbath was originally born on Ontario, but when his parents divorced,

he spent the majority of his childhood living with his mother Denise Allen,

Internative England. When he was 20 years old, Charles decided to travel back to Canada in order

to perform an extensive backpacking trip across the country, which would last for nearly a year.

But sometime after he arrived in British Columbia, Charles seized all contact with his mother

and banished without a trace. Over the next three decades, Denise would make a number of trips

to Canada in order to search for her son and chase down some odd leads, including an anonymous

note alleging that Charles was killed during an altercation before his body was dumped into a lake,
