Today we're in Haines, Alaska, a real town, a working port, a place cruise ships still visit.

But there were moments not long ago when Haines came dangerously close to becoming something else entirely,

not abandoned, not forgotten, just quieter than it should be.

It feels like a slowing down. The water narrows into the

Lin Canal, deep, still, and quiet in a way that feels almost intentional. Mountains rise sharply

on both sides. Their slopes dark with spruce and hemlock, their peaks sometimes lost in cloud cover

that hangs low and unmoving. And then the town appears. Not all at once, just enough of it

to know it's there. A dock, a few buildings, a road that curves away without urgency.
