Lawrence Bittaker slowly opened his eyes and stretched.

His back was killing him.

He was pushing 40 now, too old to be sleeping on the floor of his van.

He pushed himself up and slid open the door. The sun was just rising over the San Gabriel

mountains, bathing the trees in golden light. He lit a cigarette and strolled into the woods.

As he walked through the trees, he couldn't help but smile.

Back notwithstanding, he hadn't felt this good in years.

He was finally at peace among nature. Now he understood why people

liked camping so much. He laughed to himself as he made his way back to the van. He'd have to ask the girls if they were enjoying the trip as much as he was.

He knocked hard on the passenger side door to wake up 13-year-old Leah Lamp and 15-year-old Jackie Gilliam.

At the sound, the girl's eyes snapped open, darting from side to side.

They looked like they wanted to say something.
