In the previous chapters, the Comte de Rochefort, the man from Mung, visits Melady and arranges for a carriage to take her and Madame Bonacieux to Armantier.

Melady convinces Bonacieux that cardinalist agents are after them and they must flee together.

As Rochefort's carriage arrives, D'Artagnan and the musketeers follow behind.

Melaide manipulates Bonacieux into believing the agents are there to capture her,

and, when Bonacieuxius hesitates, she poisons her wine,

telling her it will give her strength before escaping alone.

D'Artagnan arrives just as Bonassure succumbs to the poison,

and she reveals Melady's identity before perishing.

Lord de Winter arrives from England just after, having chased Melady,

and Atos reveals to him that Melady is his first wife.

The men decide to rest for the evening, and pursue her in the morning to take their vengeance.
