In the previous chapters, the right-hand man of Lord De Winter and jailer of Melady, John Felton,

visited Melady during the night, imploring her to give a full explanation as to her being imprisoned by her brother-in-law. Melady then began to spin a deceptive yarn about having been kidnapped by a man who abused

her terribly in an attempt to make her his wife. Before Melady finished her story, or even

revealed the identity of the horrible man.

Felton was filled with revengeful hatred.
