In the previous chapters, the musketeers having succeeded in their plot to foil milady's assassination attempt,

Malady is promptly taken into custody on arrival.

She is taken to a country mansion, where Lord De Winter reveals that he is behind the whole affair,

not yet admitting that he is following the musketeer's

advice. He introduces her to John Felton, the soldier who's to be her jailer, a seemingly

impenetrable and cold man. He informs, my lady, she must stay there for 15 or 20 days before being banished to the

southern colonies, and so, when left alone, she begins to plot her escape. Now that you're

caught up with the story so far, let's get ourselves ready for a good night's sleep.
