delivers the Queen's desperate letter,

but immediately notices that a piece is missing, the handywork of Meledi,

known to him as the Comptest de Winter, who stole it from him during a ball.

Realising the Cardinal's plot, the Duke orders a full naval

blockade of the English ports to prevent milady from reaching France with the stolen piece,

a move widely considered as a declaration of war.

Having the brooch repaired, Buckingham tasks d'Artagnan with a frantic journey back to Paris,

and he arrives just in time, the night before the Royal Ball.
