I think what's called for is a much greater focus on what we call the turn-spited aisle

So the typical approach of trying to deter the use of nuclear weapon is the traditional

Cold War, a sort of thinking of mutually assured destruction, or in this case a variation

of not, mutually assured because North Korea can't destroy us, but basically assuring

them that if they use a nuclear weapon that's going to lead to the destruction of the regime,

and that's actually been the declared policy of the United States essentially put out

in public in the 2018 nuclear posture review, the idea that essentially if the North Korean

regime were to use a nuclear weapon, then that would lead to the end of the regime.

Marcus Garlosskas is an expert on North Korea.

He served as the intelligence community senior most North Korea analysts from 2014 to 2020,

and he served for 12 years as an analyst with the US military in South Korea.

Today, he is a senior fellow at the Atlanta Council and he teaches at Georgetown University.
