In 1931, the SS Bacachimo was trapped in an ice drift after an unexpected storm near Alaska.

In such dangerous conditions the captain and crew made the decision that they would abandon ship and take shelter on land until the storm passed.

But they wouldn't return until almost a month later, and when they did, the ship had broken free.

Now of course their initial thoughts were that the ship had sunk, but they were wrong.

The truth is, there were still regular sightings of the SS Picimo in Alaskan waters

after she broke free of that ice drift.
