Nelson Mandela leaves prison holding his wife Winnie's hand. After 27 years as a political

prisoner, he is walking into a future that will see him become president of a

unified South Africa,

freed from the racist divisions of apartheid.

The white domination of power is over.

Four years earlier, on a dark winter night in Cape Town, a student named Larry runs down the stairs of his grandparents' house,

screaming in terror, having just seen something

that he will never forget.

These two events are connected in the most unexpected way. The answer lies in a strange

and very South African ghost story.

It was as clear to me as my grandmother was at the bottom of the stairs.

Episode 7, The Thing in the Attic. Oh, Let me introduce you to Larry. He's in his early 50s now. These days he lives in London and has just the trace of his South African accent.

I'm not somebody who believes in ghost stories and I'm not somebody who believes particularly in the

paranormal. In other words, I would want to find some form of reasonable explanation for what

I experienced. He's short, kind of delicate, in a rock and roll leather

jacket with curly graying hair. He runs a company and exudes a quiet authority. I find it hard to make small talk, but perhaps that's because he's nervous.

I found it very, very difficult to speak about. My family know about it and my wife and a few other people.
