Joel Beeke is president and professor of systematic theology and homiletics at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary and a pastor at Heritage Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids, MI. He is also editor of Banner of Sovereign Grace Truth, editorial director of Reformation Heritage Books, president of Inheritance Publishers, and vice president of the Dutch Reformed Translation Society.

Without the application of the Spirit, the promises of God will lead to self-deceit,

Without the illumination of the Spirit, self-examination tends to introspection, bondage,

The witness of the Spirit, divorced from the promises of God and from scriptural inward

and excessive emotionalism. So the three reinforce each other when they are given by the Holy Spirit.

Our assurance can increase and decrease in different seasons of our life.
