Welcome back to another episode of five minutes in church history. On this episode we are traveling back to Germany and we are traveling to the city of Barron.

Barron is up in the north over towards the west, not too far from the border with Holland.

And in 1520, Berthold Holler came to the church at St Vincent there in the city of Bern.

Holler had been influenced by Melanchin,

and he had been influenced by Zwingley.

And later, especially after 1521,

Holler and Zwingley would correspond often and consider themselves to be quite the allies.

Well, Holler was interested in reformation ideas and was leaning towards the reformation,

but the city itself was not.

And in 1523, the city affirmed

Roman Catholic doctrines and its Roman Catholic commitment.

In fact, it explicitly forbade the preaching of Protestantism and of Luther's ideas.

But one thing that the city allowed in 1523, and this is fascinating, the city allowed for the preaching of biblical

themes and that's exactly what Birdhold Holler set out to do from the pulpit there

at the church of St. Vincent. And guess what happened

with all of this preaching of biblical themes? Well you guessed correctly. In 1525

these sermons started replacing the mass at St. Vincent.

Holler just put an end to the ritual of the mass and by 1527 the reformed ideas basically had the run of the city.

On January 6 1528 the City Council called for a dispute and the ten theses of Baron were

presented on January 6 1528. They were roundly affirmed there were only a few dissenting ministers in the city at that time,

they quickly departed from the city and the city of Barron became staunchly and firmly a reformation city.

There was quite a ripple effect of the ten theses at Barron.
