Verdenand had sweated through a shirt. He took it off and stretched.

Miranda fell silent at the sight of him. It was Verdenand's third pile of wood that he had

chopped. They all needed more wood, after someone named Calban left and didn't return.

Even though the prince had put on a strong face, he was getting painful blisters.

He was a prince, a king, after the very recent death of his father.

These were his first blisters, ever. But none of that mattered on this island, with these people.

Miranda talked to Verdenand in a low whisper, so Prospero, who was studying in the adjacent chamber,

wouldn't hear. She told him all about the island, and he told her all about his

kingdom, adding that he was serious, by the way. By the proposal, she was the most wonderful person

he had ever met. If you made it off this island, he would still love for her to be his queen.

Miranda beamed. She would love that as well. So, even though this was the only face she had ever

seen, besides her fathers, and she knew nothing of the world beyond the island, Miranda promised

that she would love him and only him for the rest of her life. They heard a page churn in
