Summary

In recent games the Lakers have won by showing adaptability with their defensive schemes and by deploying two-big and small-ball lineups. Pete and Darius discuss these recent adjustments and contextualize them with Rui Hachimura’s move to the bench and the pending return of Austin Reaves to discuss the current state of the team and what this can mean for them moving forward.

What do you think about the Laker team now?

0:03.0

You follow the box scores of the games every day?

0:06.0

Just the Lakers.

0:07.0

You're kidding.

0:08.0

That is really a compliment.

0:10.0

I was pleased to see you smile at the top part show because once the game starts, you have a game face.

0:17.0

You don't smile much out there.

0:20.0

I don't think you have to do things for money anymore.

0:22.9

And it's been a couple games since we last spoke. And I'm glad for that. I want to talk about

0:33.1

our team not in necessarily long term or even just the last game of the big comeback they made

0:39.2

this weekend against Dallas, but sort of in a medium term, what's happened over the last

0:44.0

seven to ten days or so, because I think it's important, especially after that Charlotte game

0:48.4

that I felt like was a bit of a low point. One of the things I do before the season is I try to

0:53.6

give myself some objective measures of if the team is on track or not. For example, the top offense type of thing. If they're going to be a contending type of team, they need to be a top three to five type of offense. And they're not, right? And so that's one of the things that if you don't hit this checkpoint, that I don't think they have to hit every single one of them, but I think they need to hit enough of them to be able to win a championship. And one of those things that I was really adamant about that even after the good first quarter of the season, I thought was going to be very important for the second and third quarters of the season was sort of a diversity in how they

could go about things.

1:29.1

And so I wrote this little list down of the last four games of things that have happened,

1:34.0

four or five games, seven to ten days, whatever it is, that things that have happened over

1:37.7

that time that I think speak to that level of diversity, right?

1:42.1

First, a more broad topic that we've talked a lot about on this

1:45.0

pod, Rui is coming off of the bench and getting 28 minutes a game, the last couple of games,
