Have you ever heard the song Yankee Doodle?

I remember hearing the rhyme and song growing up and thinking it was so ridiculous.

Yankee Doodle went to town riding on a pony, stuck a feather in his hat, and called it macaroni.

I was excited to finally learn the origin of the song. The first

thing I learned is that it started as a joke. The tune is older than the United States itself.

Historians think it comes from a song people sang in Europe hundreds of years ago. Some say

parts of the melody were sung in England,

Ireland, and even the Netherlands. The words Yankee Doodle first became famous in America

during the 1700s. Back then, the British soldiers used the song to tease the American colonists.

They called the colonists Yankees, and Doodle was a silly word for someone who acted a little foolish.

The British thought the colonists were kind of silly and not very good at being soldiers.

So they made up a song to laugh at them.
