Sparta used one to defeat the Athenians in the Peloponnesian War.

The European army used them to great effect to block cotton exports from the south during the Civil War, starving the Confederacy of revenue.

They were used in World War I

against Germany and the Central Powers, and again in World War II against Germany and the Axis

powers. In 1962, to avert a potential nuclear conflict, President John F. Canada used a

blockade to keep Soviet missiles out of Cuba. Now, a new blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. Navy is now monitoring

traffic. The first goal deprive Iran of revenue. The second goal used that financial deprivation
