Hello, everyone, I'm Major Garrett in Washington. Welcome to The Takeout. We've got some variables in tonight's show, so I just want to give you our rough run of show.

When we opened, I just said the president has a press conference. It's scheduled for 5.30 p.m. What you're seeing right there, that's not it. He is giving prepared remarks to House

Republicans. We are told from that podium he will leave after those remarks and then come back

to make some statements about the war with Iran and take questions. And when that happens,

whenever that happens, my colleague and the anchor of the CBS evening news, Tony DeCopal, will take over

via a CBS News special report. As I just mentioned, in the interim, the president is meeting

with House Republicans to go over strategies for the midterm elections because they're coming.

There's a couple of things on House Republicans' minds. Among them, the average price of a gallon

of gas has risen 50

cents in eight days. Also, airport security lines are growing noticeably longer as staff

shortages mount because TSA employees continue to work without pay. And that is a consequence

of a standoff here in Washington over funding for the Department

of Homeland Security.
