Summary

I'm back from Hungary, where the topic of the day was the future of faith in the West, without which it seems unlikely we'll survive. But are we on the brink of a revival? There are some hopeful signs, and no one better to discuss them with than my guest today. Justin Brierley has been podcasting and writing about the return of religious faith for 20 years. The trends he's been watching all that time are suddenly coming to a remarkable prominence. We talked faith and politics in the U.S. and the U.K., how the church may have let men down, and where this is all going next.

Welcome back to Young Heretics Conversations. This is our occasional interview series, where I get to chat with people who are doing interesting work about interesting things in contemporary life, bringing ancient principles and values to bear on our modern situation.

0:23.3

I mentioned that I've been doing a little traveling, so it's a good opportunity to drop

0:27.3

some of these interviews. I'm actually back now. I've just gotten back from Hungary,

0:32.6

from Budapest. If you can see, and you're watching on YouTube, you will note I've come back

0:36.5

with a mustache. I went overseas to acquire one.

0:39.3

They're very difficult to obtain on the black market, but I managed to shave my beard into one of these cool mustache as all the kids are doing these days.

0:46.3

Not sure how long it's going to last.

0:48.3

Maybe you can drop a note in the comments about whether you think it's a good look or not.

0:52.3

But that's actually not the most

0:54.5

important thing about my trip. The most important thing about the travel I've just been doing

0:59.9

is that I was in Hungary for a conference at the Danube Institute, which is a think tank, and they

1:05.4

had gathered together some American scholars, some Hungarian scholars, and some European scholars to discuss the birth rate crisis.

1:14.8

This is something that Hungary is very much involved in, invested in, but it's not just a

1:21.2

Hungarian issue. It's a worldwide issue. There is this crazy birth dearth going on.

1:26.3

Birth rates are plummeting in the east and in the West, in highly developed nations and in less developed nations, with very few exceptions, people are having fewer kids.

1:35.3

And this seems to represent, well, what does it represent?

1:39.3

I think it represents at least a kind of uncertainty about the future and about the human race itself. I've talked a lot

1:46.4

about various aspects of this, and I want to get back to debriefing some of it next week with

1:52.1

you guys what was discussed. Really interesting set of talks and panels about just how we can

1:58.8

restore the kind of hopefulness and optimism that is required to have babies and perpetuate the species and go on advancing our civilization.

2:09.6

So this is not just something that Hungary is concerned with, although it was interesting to hear about some of the stuff they've been doing over there, what's worked, what hasn't.

2:16.6

Think about what we can do in the U.S. and in other Western nations.
