Summary

John Stonestreet and Shane Morris discuss last week's momentous Supreme Court decisions:  one that handcuffs states that try to restrict abortion, and one that protects religious institutions--especially schools--from discrimination by the government.

Also on today's program: China's new security law could spell the end of democratic Hong Kong. Will other nations and especially international corporations push back on Beijing?  Shane Morris shares a portion of his BreakPoint Podcast interview with Jason Thacker, author of  The Age of AI:  Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity.  Finally, John and Shane answer your questions about the Christian perspective on the death penalty and the state mandating masks in church.

This is Breakpoint this week, a weekly briefing on faith, culture, worldview, and mission with John Stone Street, President of the Colson Center for Christian World View.

0:12.0

Welcome to Breakpoint this week. I'm Shane Morris, and I'm here with John Stone Street to talk about the stories of the week from a Christian worldview perspective.

0:19.7

John, last week we talked about the Supreme

0:21.8

Court and you said that there was a lot more big decisions coming down the pike before our next

0:26.3

program and boy, that certainly turned out to be the case. We've got two big decisions that have

0:31.2

just changed the landscape of religious liberty and the abortion issue for Christians moving

0:36.8

forward. Yeah, it really did. I mean,

0:38.9

we started out with a decision having to do with abortion and went on with a decision specifically

0:44.3

dealing with Christian institutions. We could say one good, one bad, but there's also a lot of

0:49.9

undercurrent here in terms of what kind of court we have, which is a really important, I think,

0:55.5

to nail down given the kind of hysterical worry, particularly from those on the left, particularly

1:01.9

those who are pro-abortion forces about, you know, the threat of this court, in particular

1:08.0

overturning Roe v. Wade. And I think the, you know, the first take-down,

1:12.4

or the first takeaway, I guess, may be better word than takedown. The first takeaway is essentially

1:18.4

that this court is not going to be the one that overturns Roe v. Wade. And what we had instead

1:23.1

was a decision. June Medical Services versus Rousseau and you're talking about, right? Yeah, the June Medical services versus Rousseau, and you're talking about, right?

1:29.1

Yeah, the June medical services versus Rousseau, which has had to do what we, let's lay the

1:34.0

groundwork. It had to do with the Louisiana law, which in many ways was patterned after a Texas

1:38.6

law that the court had struck down, I think in 2016, which basically required abortion providers, abortionists, to have

1:47.2

hospital admitting privileges within 30 miles of where they were performing abortions.

1:53.2

And in Texas, of course...

1:54.2

Which is standard for surgery centers.
