Happy Labor Day weekend.

A perfect time to wrap up one of the weirdest summers at the

box office that I can remember. Barbenheimer, of course, but it goes way beyond that. A bunch of

supposedly surefire franchise blockbusters underperformed, as if the audience was saying enough already.

And there were some out-of-nowhere smash hits, like Sound of Freedom, the child trafficking movie,

which actually grows more domestically than Mission Impossible 7 in Indiana Jones 5 at a single-digit fraction of the budget.

At the beginning of the summer, we did a show setting out our confidence scale,

how confident I was that movies would meet expectations given their budgets and talent and marketing.

I whiffed on a few, notably Little Mermaid, but I was pretty confident in Barbie. Obviously,

I never said it would become the biggest movie of the year, but I did give it an eight out of ten on

the confidence scale. Regardless, we're going to hand out some awards today, the summer box office

awards. And to do so, I've got a lovely co-host, Jeff Bach of Exhibitor Relations, the research firm.

He's a box office analyst and tweets about this stuff a lot.

So today, it's the summer box office awards, the highs, the lows, the dubious achievements of the season.
