Evelyn Haverfield and Vera Home, also known as Jack, were in love.

Not only were they in love, but they also worked together, as suffragettes during prison sentences, in hospitals abroad and elsewhere.

Speaking to Lauren Good, author Wendy Moore, who's written a book on Jack and Eve,

explores the fascinating and treacherous lives of these two women in the First World War.

Hi, Wendy. Thank you so much for joining me today.

Hello, Lauren. Hi. Nice to join you. Thank you very much for having me.

Your new book, Jack and Eve, two women in love and at war, centres on the relationship between Vera Home, who goes by Jack and

Eve, who will refer to as Eve. Before we talk about these fascinating lives, I feel we should

address the identities of these two characters. We'll be referring to both of these people as

women, as you do in the book. There can be a difficulty in reanimating past lives through a

modern lens, especially when it comes the identities of individuals. How did you approach Jack's

identity? Well, that's a very interesting question. So Jack, she was baptized, Vera home.

As far as we know, she regarded herself as female, but she was

clearly uncomfortable in her skin to some extent. And she preferred to dress in male clothing

when she could. She called herself Jack and she had relationships mostly with women.
