Summary

Somewhere along the Pacific Crest Trail, a solo hiker found himself far from anyone—or so he thought. Out of the treeline stepped an old man: tall, wiry, with shock-white hair and a hollow stare. He asked, almost too softly, “Are you alone out here?” The hiker lied, saying he was traveling with a group. But the man only smiled and began following, matching his every step as the path narrowed. Then came the stories—of bogs so deep they could swallow a person whole, of hikers who vanished without a sound. Finally, the stranger whispered, “This is the stretch where they all go quiet.” Follow Be. And without further ado, let's begin.

0:36.2

There's a stretch of the cascade range between White Pass and goat rocks that feels wrong when the sun dips behind the ridge line.

0:44.8

It's the kind of place where sound doesn't carry right, where the bogs breathe steam, even when the air's cold and still.

I used to think that that kind of talk was

0:56.6

trail superstition, just stories meant to keep through hikers cautious on the Pacific Crest Trail.

1:03.4

Well, that was before last July. So I'd been heading southbound after flipping at the Sierra, pushing long days to make up some time.

1:14.4

It was late afternoon, the sky a heavy gold through the haze, when I realized that I hadn't seen another hiker in almost two days now.

1:23.6

The section before White Pass is swampy too, ankle-deep water, slick roots, the kind of terrain that steals your speed and your confidence.

I must have been about an hour from where I'd planned to camp when I saw him.

1:37.9

He stepped out of the side of the trail like he'd been waiting for me, tall, wiry, wearing short khaki shorts, and a faded windbreaker zipped up to his throat.

1:49.5

His hair was white, puffed like frost, and his backpack looked ancient, a boxy canvas sort of thing,

1:56.6

with metal buckles that clattered when he moved. Southbounder?

2:01.5

He asked immediately, breathless, like the words had been sitting on his tongue too long.

2:07.2

Uh, yeah, I said, adjusting my pack.
