Today we go back to October 1968 and a violent street battle between students from

the left and the right in the center of

Sao Paulo. It became a symbol of political and social tension during Brazil's

military dictatorship.

I've been speaking to two witnesses to the Battle of Marientonia.

Paolo de Tarsu Véin sezlao was a student at the University of Sao Paulo.

They were ready for the attack.

They had acid bombs, Molotov cocktails and even guns.

Marcel Mendes was a student at Mackenzie University.

I saw people injured by stones, beaten with sticks.

I saw people bleeding.

Mackenzie Presbyterian University, a traditional private institution founded in the 19th

century, took up a whole block on one side of Huamary Antonia in the center of Sao Paulo.
