It was the early morning hours of April 25th, 2010.

25-year-old Heidi Furcus and her husband, 27-year-old Nicholas Furcus, were at their home on

Minnehaha Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota.

And then, shortly after 6 a.m., Nick woke Heidi up and told her he could hear someone downstairs

at the front door, someone who was trying to break into their house. Nick said that he and Heidi

decided to make a run for it. Nick grabbed his shotgun from the closet. Heidi called 911 from her

cell phone. 35 seconds into that call, the 911 operator can hear a loud sound, a gunshot.

And then the call with Heidi goes dead.

After her call was cut off, the 911 operator kept trying to call back.

But Heidi's phone went straight to voicemail.

Then, two minutes later

at 6.33 a.m., they got another call. This time, it was Nick Furkus. Nick sounds like he's in an

absolute panic here. He's said that the intruder had broken into their house, that he got into a

physical struggle with a home invader, that the assailant took the gun from

Nick while they were struggling, and then shot him and Heidi. When the St. Paul police got to the

scene, according to later reports, they found the door open and they could smell gunpowder. They found

Heidi lying in the kitchen, flat on her back with her feet toward the front door.

She was dead. She had been shot in the back. Heidi had blood all over her face and in her hair.

Nick was right next to his wife, on the floor also bleeding from a gunshot wound in his upper thigh.

He was still talking with the 911 operator. His shotgun was lying nearby on the floor.

Detectives set up their crime scene tape and started their manhunt for the killer.

They wanted to get justice for Heidi's friends and family and for the community.
