Summary

I wanted to see the place where a war between the United States and Iran may begin. It turned out people over there couldn’t talk to me on tape because they live in countries without a tradition of free speech and they all feel they are being watched, and I didn’t want to get anybody in trouble. So this is a travelogue, a story about what it’s like to be there.

The psychedelic Persian Gulf surf music is by Hayvanlar Alemi (he’s actually from Turkey). Here’s the link to his website.

Welcome to Home of the Brave. I'm Scott Carrier. The first thing I learn on my trip to the

0:10.0

Strait of Her Moves is that I won't be spending much time out of doors.

0:15.0

I land in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates on the southeastern shore of the Persian Gulf,

0:22.0

and when I walk out of the airport, I'm hit by a wall of

0:25.8

heat and humidity that seems beyond possible for the planet. The app on my phone says the heat index is 123 degrees and it's just

0:36.4

after midnight. My glasses fog up and I feel dizzy. I order an Uber and he's close by but it's difficult to walk. My legs are heavy, I'm

0:48.1

dripping with sweat. Thank God the Uber is Alexis, a plush ice box slightly scented of mint,

0:56.0

with a pastune driver dressed as an English chauffeur.

1:00.0

My situation is obvious.

1:02.0

Outside, bad, inside good.

1:05.0

Outside is hostile terrain.

1:08.0

Inside is the course of empire.

1:10.0

The Lexis glides along a smooth illuminated freeway, elevated among other elevated

1:18.5

illuminated freeways, linking clusters of ornamental skyscrapers that look like neon earrings or a necklace

1:26.7

adorning the breast of the Persian Gulf.

1:29.9

Or think of the Persian Gulf as a bladder, 600 miles long, 200 miles wide, a bladder that fills

1:36.6

with oil.

1:38.1

The land surrounding the bladder holds 30% of the world's oil supply. Iran to the north, Kuwait and Iraq to the west, Bahrain, Qatar,

1:47.8

Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to the south.

1:52.4

The oil comes out of the ground and is piped to ships offshore.

1:56.5

And when they are full of oil, they exit the Gulf, the bladder, through a narrow urethra-like passageway called the Strait of Hormuz before

2:06.4

releasing into the Indian Ocean.
