23 of real cool history for kids.

This episode is for Clara Kimmel, who wanted to hear the story of Bass Reeves, the man whom some historians believe inspired the classical character, the Lone Ranger.

Ranger. the incessant drone of the biting insects and pulled his bandana up a little more to cover his neck. He hunkered down close to the ground.

The shade of the low-lying brush along the river bank helped ease the oppressive heat just a bit.

The man blinked his eyes a few times to stay alert. This was the fourth day of his stakeout.

He was on the trail of a notorious horse thief,

a bandit who had made a name for himself

by stealing horses all over this part of the country. The lawman stretched his long legs out and

eased himself over onto his stomach. He could see down the road in both directions.

He knew this was the outlaw's usual route, and with just a bit of patience, he would get his

man.

Later in the afternoon, the hidden lawman spotted the familiar figure of the outlaw riding down the road toward him.

The horse's hooves stirred up little clouds of dust with every step.

He had studied the criminal's arrest warrant carefully, and although

he had never learned to read, he had memorized the wanted man's description and long list of

felonies. He knew beyond a shadow of a doubt. This was the

man he was waiting for. The lawman stood to his feet, caught up the trailing reins of his horse's bridle, and stepped out of his hiding place.

He wasn't concerned about being recognized as the most famous criminal hunting deputy marshal in the territory because as usual
