Summary

The mainstream media have never been friends of conservatives, but their approach to news - and political news in particular - is far different than it was just a few decades ago. But the media landscape is also very different than it was a generation ago. In today's special edition, Jim and Greg assess the good, the bad, and the crazy of today's media.

Some conservatives may wonder what's good about the media. The simple answer is we have exponentially more options today to seek out and discover the news. Not that long ago, a few different news organizations dictated which stories you would hear about. That's not true anymore. Jim and Greg discuss the challenges that brings but also the opportunity for Americans to have a far more comprehensive idea of what is really happening.

Then, they dive into the biggest problem in our political media - the glaring shift from a leftward bias to leftward partisanship. They explain the difference, how quickly that evolution happened, and why it's such a significant and damaging change to our news and our politics.

Finally, they discuss an inevitable consequence of a never-ending news cycle - media burnout. With an avalanche of stories in our news feeds every day, many people are getting exhausted by it and simply don't pay attention anymore. Is that a good trend or will it lead to a more uninformed public?

Hey, very glad you're with us for this edition of the Three Martini lunch, a little bit different

fair for you today.

Rather than taking a look at the latest headlines, we are going to be digging into a topic we talk about a lot but not really on a macro scale and that is the state of the media and I know what you're already saying how could there be a good martini about the media other than of course the high quality of the morning jolt and

0:35.0

Radio America programming and of course the three martini lunch podcast but

0:39.0

Jim we're going to be looking at it in a number of different ways.

0:42.0

First of all on the good side when we were growing

0:45.0

up there weren't that many outlets for media. You basically had your big networks,

0:49.6

your major newspapers, and your local newspaper and you got some top of the hour news on the radio as well but there really wasn't talk radio until we were teenagers and the internet of course didn't really get going until the-90s and really not in a way that could compete media-wise until several years after that.

1:08.0

And so on the bad side, it does give you some crazy people out there but it also does give you

1:14.4

access to real good real solid journalism that you wouldn't hear anywhere else

1:18.8

yeah no look I when I proposed this as a topic to discuss, I knew everybody be like, ah, the media sucks.

1:26.8

And they've got a lot of good reasons that we will have plenty of things that are bad and crazy martinis.

1:32.2

But I kind of want to recognize that we live in an era of not just the ease of creating

1:36.7

podcasts like this one. Although let's point out three marti- what are we like 14 years

1:40.0

into this now? We were way ahead of the curve, right? The pure plethora, right? And the degree to

1:46.0

which people are, Joe Rogan can do a three hour interview with somebody and people will watch

1:50.9

it all the way through. And you know, no cutting up into snippets and trying to make somebody look bad

1:56.0

like you know in three hours I think you get a decent amount of time to make your

1:59.0

point a lot of times I will see people, oftentimes conservative columnists complaining.
