For the Colson Center, I'm John Stone Street.

October 27th is known as International Religious Freedom Day.

It was on this day in 1988 that then President Bill Clinton signed the International

Religious Freedom Act.

However, this date, though now remembered, also carries a surprising checkered history when it comes to

religious freedom.

It was on this day in AD 312 that Constantine the Great had his vision of the cross while on March to battle.

That led to his conversion to Christianity and eventually the edict of Milan

which legalized Christianity in the empire.

It was also on this day in 1553 that Michael Servitis was burned at the stake outside

of Geneva for heresy. And tragically on this date in 2018, when a gunman opened fire at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh,

killing 11 and injuring 6.

Today, religious freedom is affirmed, not only the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, but other international documents as well.

At the same time, religious freedom is in a precarious position and under constant threat around the globe.

The shocking rise in global anti-Semitism is an obvious example, but there are other atrocities as well.

Back in 2014, ISIS committed unspeakable atrocities against the Yazidis and what meets the criteria for being labeled genocide.

In 2017, Rohingya Muslims face genocide, and that led many of them to flee to Bangladesh.

More recently, Muslims in Bangladesh attacked the Hindu community there, burning homes and terrorizing their neighbors.

And in China, the Uyghur Muslims and practitioners of Foulangong face severe
