But the stua desk doesn't move. He glances around. The other passengers glare at him from their seats. He sits down, checks his watch. He's timed everything to perfection.

I'm sorry, sir, that flight just left. He tries to catch his breath. It can't have. I need to be honest. She steps away. I'm sorry, sir. It's gone. His heart pounds. He paces, heads back to the desk. Buys a ticket to Los Angeles. Maybe he can catch a flight to Melbourne or Sydney from there.

Four flights later, his body aches with exhaustion. His mind scrambles as he tries to work out which flight he's on. He looks at his ticket. He's on his way to San Francisco. He's been travelling for days and he's hardly got anywhere.

He gays his over at a family further up the aisle. A man his age is talking to his wife and teenage kids. He listens to them laugh as they share a joke. His heart clenches.
