Today we're going back to West Germany in 1962 and a

magazine article that led to the imprisonment of seven journalists, a vehement

debate about press freedom and a full-blown government crisis.

This is the Spiegel affair.

Chancellor Adonar of West Germany is facing yet another crisis. Dr. Adena hurried home last week from America

and spent the weekend trying to buttress his government against the furious protests that

followed the arrests of editorial members of the staff of the weekly paper

Ders Spiegel.

There are two main characters in this story of German press and politics.

A politician, France Joseph Strauss, the West German Minister of Defence, and a journalist

Rudolf Auchstein, the founder and publisher of Dersbeagle.
