Summary
Inspired by the ideas in Morgan Housel's book The Psychology of Money, Jesse discusses the meaning of the word "wealth," and how we define wealth in our own lives. Is it just about money in the bank, or is it about our physical health too? Or family health, or liking our job, or having options in life? It turns out, wealth can mean many different things, and perhaps it's best to look at wealth as a spectrum rather than simply a pile of money in the bank.

| 0:00.0 | Hello, why never is my name is Jesse Mekum and this is another YNAB podcast where we teach |
| 0:09.0 | you four rules to help you stop and paycheck to paycheck, get out of debt, and save more money. |
| 0:15.2 | My good friend Mark Butler, who is my co-host at our other podcast called Beginning Balance, |
| 0:20.1 | it is targeted mainly to business owners, although sometimes old habits die hard and I |
| 0:25.2 | do start to work in the personal stuff, Mark has been raving to me about a book called |
| 0:31.2 | The Psychology of Money, and I said who wrote that book and he said his name is Morgan |
| 0:35.2 | Housel, and then our podcast editor extraordinaire Haley, she sent me to an article at collaborativefund.com, |
| 0:45.9 | and I thought the name sounded familiar and it was called The Spectrum of Wealth by Morgan |
| 0:50.0 | Housel, so I started scrolling and reading, and I wanted to share a couple of thoughts |
| 0:54.8 | with you. The idea is basically how do you think about wealth? I know here at YNAB we often talk so |
| 1:00.8 | much about the ins and outs, we talk about that money needs to be allocated appropriately in line |
| 1:08.6 | with your priorities, yes, yes, yes, but to what end? We know once the money lines up with your |
| 1:15.5 | priorities, it really does work, but a lot of times we just gloss over priorities. |
| 1:23.2 | So this little exercise that this article that Morgan Housel walks us through is interesting, |
| 1:30.3 | because he's basically trying to say, well now be careful, what does wealth, even mean? He talks |
| 1:35.0 | about relative wealth and references the Chris Rock joke, where if Bill Gates woke up and found out |
| 1:40.8 | he only had as much money as Oprah that he jumped out a window, and it's the idea that it's all |
| 1:47.0 | relative. So there's so many different lenses through which you can view it, and there were |
| 1:52.9 | some that I really liked. So for instance, he's clear where he says there's a spectrum here, |
| 1:57.1 | so complete reliance is where you are in deep poverty, you are completely reliant on the kindness |
| 2:02.3 | of strangers for sustenance for life. It could be that your income is above average, but you |
| 2:09.4 | are overcome with envy, and you feel inadequate toward those that earn more. So you have this |
