The symptoms were horrendous and of swift and virulent onset. So for instance, a soldier home from leave, who'd suddenly gone down with symptoms of Spanish flu in the middle of Manchester, having perhaps just got off

the train at Manchester Piccadilly Station, wouldn't suddenly just feel a bit weak and a bit ill

and want to get home to his mum's and lie down? He would collapse. He would be hemorrhaging

blood from his lungs. He might have blood coming out of his nostrils.
