Valley, I'm Mick Garrus, and this is Postmortem.

Let's talk about one of the most complicated issues in the world of genre films, censorship.

It's a heavy topic with little consensus and lots of personal opinions.

What is your line between social responsibility and free artistic expression?

Obviously the physical, sexual, and mental abuse of children, and women, and men, and animals

is against the law, and with good reason, whether it's in front of a camera or in real life.

But what about fictional depictions of sedacts?

Where does telling a story end and the violation of the people involved begin?

The consumers and the filmmakers alike have their own standards of responsibility.

Back in 1964, US Supreme Court Justice Potter steward set of obscenity.

I can't define it, but I know it when I see it.

That's a pretty slippery slope upon which to base a nation's legal system,

but it doesn't seem to have changed much in the 60-some years since.

When we were making the Masters of Horror series,

Showtime gave us a set of five rules not to break.

No adults killing kids, no male genital nudity,

and a couple more nebulous guidelines, none of which we ever broke.
