Summary

As with any great mystery, it can turn some individuals into steadfast researchers and citizen detectives, dedicating years to a quest for answers. We were lucky enough to interview one such person, Professor Derek Abbott of the University of Adelaide in Australia. In addition to teaching Electrical Engineering at the University, Professor Abbott also has a background in Physics, biomedical engineering, complex systems, and probability theory, which can involve the fields of cryptography and forensics. He first became interested in the Somerton Man case around 1995, and then fully immersed himself in an effort to crack the cryptography aspect in 2007, even enlisting the aid of some of his students as a school project. In Part Two of our series, Professor Abbott gives us an overview of the story, then shares some of his findings and conclusions. Tonight's Quote: “Yes, this man has someone to love him. He is known only to God.” — Captain E.J. Webb of the Salvation Army at The Somerton Man’s Funeral, as cited in Gerald Feltus’ book, The Unknown Man Show Links: We've found that some sites are not showing these links as clickable unless they are URLs, so until those outlets improve their show notes section, we are providing actual URLs next to the clickable description of each link to make things easier for our listeners! Thanks so much for riding out the break with us. I had a once in a lifetime road trip with my family,

0:04.2

including my six-year-old son throughout the desert Southwest. It was his spring break.

0:08.4

Those of you who follow us on Instagram may have seen some pictures from it.

0:11.1

Or was it? Or was it just a group of actors that's scotted hired to pose as his family?

0:16.8

You know, that's a funny joke, but I do want to say...

0:19.1

I do or maybe it's not. But I do want to say, for our listeners who seem to be getting confused,

0:24.0

I am the guy with the beard. And the slightly higher pitched voice.

0:28.4

Yes, I talk like a girl. No, but it fits you. If you see a person, maybe one day we'll have a

0:34.0

fan get together. It fits. I don't know if mine fits because obviously they think the bigger guy

0:39.4

has the slightly deeper voice. Yes. Anyway, it's the opposite. So whatever you're picturing in your head,

0:44.7

it's the opposite. Of course, voice. Anyway, this trip was nothing shy of epic. I want to give a

0:49.6

special shout out to Joshua Taylor of Cottonwood, Arizona, who gave me the VIP treatment at one of the

0:55.6

places we stayed. Which was, it was pretty crazy because he had heard us talking about, you know,

1:00.4

that I was going to take this trip on part one of the Somerton man. And then lo and behold, my name

1:06.1

turned up on his computer screen. He was like, I'm not a stalker. Well, that must have been weird

1:11.0

for him and as well as us because it was like, what, somebody recognized you? That's all straight.

1:16.4

He actually couldn't, he said he couldn't email me because the protocols at the hotel. But then he...

1:20.6

I'm sure there's a few. Yeah. Like, he's don't bother the guests that you may recognize.

1:24.4

Right. But then he like, he reached out to me on Facebook and he's like, are you staying here?

1:28.8

And I was like, yeah. And it, you know what? It was awesome. When we got there, it was like played

1:32.9

of chocolate covered strawberries. Okay. Oh, good. Because he really hooked me up. But what I will say,

1:37.1

though, you know, we're in a, in a mid-level of fame, I guess, because we're just famous enough
