For six years, the compound had been the kind of place people described as quiet, with a hint of pride, as if quiet meant safe by default.

Eight townhouse units sat behind one tall fence and a heavy gate that scraped and clanked whenever

anyone came home. The parking area was shared, the routines were shared, and the small

inconveniences were shared, too, trash bins that migrated,

a hose that never quite made it back to the same hook, a single large water tank at the far end

that everyone knew was there, but no one cared about until it needed attention. The point was,

nothing slipped by, unnoticed, in a place that small, unfamiliar faces stuck out immediately.

If someone had a guest, you didn't need to be told, you saw the extra car, heard the extra

footsteps, noticed the way a unit's front light stayed on longer than usual. People knew one

another well enough to borrow a screwdriver, complain about the manager, and gather around folding tables in the parking lot for holidays

like it was a miniature neighborhood.

That was why the first comment didn't land as a joke.

It happened on an ordinary night, the kind that blurred into all the others,

when one of the tenants mentioned seeing a man near the water tank late at night.

She said it casually, almost dismissively, the way you might mention a stray cat you'd seen

by the fence. Probably someone's visitor, another tenant replied, and the conversation moved on.
