Early on, when I ran for district attorney, which we call a solicitor in South

Carolina, I guess that would have been 2000.

So quarter of a century ago, someone warned me about a potential donor.

The exact quote was to be wary of such and such. He will give you $100 and thinks he

owns you for the rest of your career. The federal judge, I respect very much, had a similar

experience when he himself was running for district attorney, also known as solicitor.

Someone donated to his campaign, and shortly after he won, that donor showed up in his office,

holding a blue traffic ticket.

Pretty minor offense in the grand scheme of things in an office with murders and robberies and

sexual assaults,

but this donor showed up with a blue traffic ticket.

The reality is district attorney, solicitors don't get involved in traffic citations.

That's an entirely separate court.

But this donor believed otherwise.

So he laid the ticket on the solicitor's desk and said, I helped get you elected. Now I need your help. So my solicitor friend, who later went on

to become a federal judge, reached into his desk drawer, took out his checkbook, took another look at the ticket, and wrote a check

to the donor to cover the amount of the traffic fine. He said, I'm happy to pay the fine out
