Role models. Our stupid society talks a lot about the need for good wholesome inspiring role models,

especially for boys because we unconsciously assume those are the ones who are going to grow up to be something.

But who do we want our young men to be? What are the ideals of American manhood?

Vegetarianism and kunelingus. Two great tastes that taste great together.

But for real, out in regular America, what are those ideas?

Well, they're all long-headed goat shit. Cartoonish invincibility fantasies for a corrupt decaying empire that worships power for its own sake, devoid of responsibility

or consequences.

Sports, action movies, comic books, all our most resonant popular narratives right now

emanate from the same martial warrior culture that idealizes super masculine dominance.

We're addicted to heroism, and we especially venerate

the ones who get to do violence.

If it's all in the name of protecting and defending,

that means it's OK, and we're still the good guys. Every nut job mass shooter in his own

mind is the totally justified violent good guy of his own Joseph Campbell

hero's journey. Manly men often think of themselves as superheroes and are

continually shocked to learn, usually too late, that they're just human beings and

limitations apply to them too.

Now plenty of men do understand that they're not invincible

and this is where our dumb shit middle school-ass culture

fails to provide any realistic visions of manhood.

Men are so desperate for an even mildly attainable role model
