Let's define those three common fairy qualities.

cause, identity, time, and space.

And whereas a supernatural force

is one that is beyond scientific understanding or the laws of nature.

A preternatural force is one by which is simply beyond what is normal or natural.

An example would be to say that autumn arrived with preternatural speed.
