This is something that we need to know if we don't know anything else about the subject

of marriage.

This is John chapter 4.

Let me give you a little background on the story.

We're about to read from the Bible here.

This is a Samaritan woman who's been married five times, and Jews hated Samaritans.

They were half-redues.

They had a syncretic type of a faith, which was part Judaism and part something else, and

the Jews hated them for that.

So they wouldn't have anything to do with them.

We have to remember that women were chattel, not cattle chattel.

In society, they were owned, men control society.

So a woman was lower than a man, and a Samaritan was hated by the Jews.

So Jesus, a Jewish man, is about to walk up and talk to a Samaritan woman, which was highly

unusual, especially because she was an outcast in her community.

She had been married five times, and now she was living with, she was cohabiting.
