Formed from the confluence of the leaf in Chickasawai rivers, the wide and slow-moving waterway winds southward and then empties

into the Mississippi Sound of the Gulf of Mexico. Notably, the Pascagoula River Basin is the last

of its size in the mainland United States to flow naturally,

unaltered by the human impact of dams or levees.

The river was named in honor of a native tribe who once lived along its banks.

Their name was likely derived from the Choctaw, meaning, quote, bread people.

Yet today, many know this Mississippi waterway by another name, the Singing River.
