Summary

Some kids are afraid of the dark. Amanda learned to be afraid of the quiet.

Home alone for one of the first times, curled up in front of the TV in a tiny Willow Street apartment, she thought the worst thing that could happen was her parents taking too long at the grocery store. Instead, something else showed up.

Out of the corner of her eye, a shape gathered itself at the end of the hallway. Not a shadow exactly. Not a person, either. A white, misty figure that somehow felt male, standing just outside her parents’ bedroom, looking straight at her — as if it had been there a while, waiting for the right moment to be seen.

Then it did something that still haunts her decades later. It slowly raised a hand, pressed a finger to where its lips should be, and told her—without a sound—to be quiet.

Because sometimes your first paranormal experience isn’t loud or violent. It just looks at you, asks you not to tell, and walks calmly back into your parents’ room.
