Here is a powerful sign that someone is self-assured and living according to their own self-direction.

What is it? My friends, it is walking away from something that looks

impressive. Maybe this has been you, maybe this has been people that you know, but think about it,

the world applauds and claps for things that we've decided as a collective are impressive,

like well-paid jobs, like long-term marriages, like communities that look a certain way,

that often require you sometimes to shrink yourself or to change or to act a certain way.

A self-assured, self-directed person does not do that. They choose coherence over optics. And this can be tricky because this is when you really have to

be on your own side. For example, I once worked with an art teacher who loved art. She loved painting. She loved

children. She was an artist. And she was offered the job after a few years working in a very

prestigious school, having incredible outcomes. She was offered the role of head of the art department.

And everyone was so excited. They were like, you deserve this.

Congratulations. She got champagne. She got cupcakes. And you know what she did? She turned it down.

She said, head of art department is a wonderful job for someone who likes organizing, admin and managing.

I like to paint. I like to be with children. I love art.

My friends, where can this be true for you in your life right now? Maybe there's a career

opportunity that looks incredible, but feels wrong. Maybe you're in a relationship that other

people think looks healthy and wonderful

and impressive, but inside you feel lonely, you just know that it's not the right one for you.

No one else can hear your inner voice. The real flex isn't impressing others, getting the

applause, getting the accolades, although our culture will have

you believe that it is. It is wearing clothes that fit. Think about it this way. Maybe once upon a time,
