Fire ushered in autumn.

Ash fell on ridge lines for three days, and then the rain descended.

And then that turned to October snow, leaving the old growth pines standing like wierry

stubble on pale mountain faces.

It was a short fall that ripped through town and a clout of smoke and left winter winds

to clean up fallen leaves.

While thanksgiving the mountains already bore the paintbrush strokes of snowboard turns.

We got lost in a rhythm of heartbeats, and in the raspy echo of climbing skins over

fresh snow.

In the backyard, the snow drift grew like the arcing spines of a whale pod, breaching from

a sea of white.

When her came in one, kind of like a guest, we thought it overstayed her welcome.

Only later do we realize that despite our complaints, we cherished her visits.
