Hi, park enthusiasts. I'm your host, Delia Diambra. And today's episode is part two of a story I started

0:07.3

to tell you last week about the 2012 Lake Anisee murders in France. If you haven't already, go back and

0:14.3

listen to part one. Like I mentioned before, there was no way I could cover this investigation in a

0:19.7

single episode. So splitting it into two

0:22.5

parts seemed like the best way to go as deep as I could on each detail without missing any

0:27.3

ground I needed to cover. To briefly recap, it was Wednesday, September 5, 2012, when an

0:33.6

unknown shooter gunned down 50-year-old British citizen, Sad al-Hilly,

0:38.3

his 47-year-old wife, Iqbal, and Iqbal's mother, Zahela.

0:42.9

The family had left their campsite near Lake Anisee and gone sightseeing that afternoon.

0:48.2

A cyclist, 45-year-old French native, Silvan Molié, was also killed in the attack.

and it was Saad who'd been intentionally targeted.

1:07.0

The only survivors were the Alhili's two daughters, four-year-old Zena and seven-year-old Zena.

1:12.6

Because the family was from England, French authorities had to work closely with British investigators to try and figure out what exactly happened.

1:20.6

The French zeroed in pretty quickly on Saad's older brother, Zaid Al-Hili, as a suspect because of an ongoing inheritance dispute

1:29.1

between the two men. However, the physical evidence in the case and witness testimony didn't

1:34.7

point to Zaid as the trigger man. Despite that, though, nine months after the shootings,

1:40.2

British authorities arrested him for conspiracy to commit murder. But those detectives working the case alongside the team from France

1:47.6

weren't totally sold on that theory.

1:50.5

They believed that the elder Al-Hilly brother was most likely innocent.

1:54.9

In fact, they pondered whether everyone had been looking in the wrong direction
