Summary

In this bonus episode, Sara and Andrea return to the story of Julie Williams and Lollie Winans to reflect on the questions that still remain — the ones that linger long after the DNA match and the headlines. Drawing from listener messages, they revisit the cyclist attack that first brought Darrell David Rice to investigators' attention, the terrain surrounding Julie and Lollie's hidden campsite, the delays that shaped the early search, and the haunting gaps the evidence could never fill.

They also explore parallels to other cases, including the Colonial Parkway murders, and consider what this season reveals about safety, wilderness, and the reality of moving through the world with vigilance.

Finally, Sara and Andrea share the story behind the season's music and how they discovered trumpet player Andrew Golden, whose evocative arrangement of "Shenandoah" became the emotional backbone of Season 3.

Before we get into your questions, we wanted to share a little bit about why we chose this story and why it's one that has stayed with us.

0:18.7

Yeah, I mean, we both love camping.

You and I go on this epic road trip every summer.

Yeah, I remember one that was a state park in the hills of Southern California.

And we pulled in, looked around,

and pulled right back out. Yep, that's right. I'll say I have a love for the Appalachian Trail, too.

0:46.3

I had a chance to hike around 15 miles of it a few years back. And it's one of the most special places.

I think the best part is that when you're out there, like when you're in nature, it just feels so

peaceful.

1:00.3

Like there's no schedule.

1:01.7

It's just you, the trees, sky, and whoever else is camping or hiking around you.

1:08.1

In fact, I always say, especially when we're at a campground, we happen to

1:12.0

pick the same weekend as all of these people there. So we're all experiencing this environment at the

1:17.4

same time. And unfortunately, as women, we've also had to learn how to hold two things at once,

1:25.0

the feeling of both being safe and still having to be very aware of our

1:29.6

surroundings. Yeah, every woman who's camped alone has thought this through. Who else is around?

1:36.1

Do I have some sort of weapon just in case? Does anyone know exactly where I am tonight?
